The Fifty Best White Rum Tasting 2015


The Tasting:
The Fifty Best held a “blind” tasting of 9 white rums (including 2 rhum agricoles) with 15 pre-qualified judges. The rhum agricoles were judged and scored separately. Strict tasting rules were applied. The order of service was established beforehand by lottery. Each of the rums were poured into fresh glasses from new sealed bottles, and served at slightly above room temperature. Only ice water, neutral unflavored crackers and chips were available to cleanse the palate.

The judges wrote down their impressions of each product on score sheets. The scoring was done on a 5-point system, with 5 as the best. Double-Gold, Gold and Silver medals are awarded according to a set range of final point scores received from the judges. There were no bronze medals awarded for this tasting.

The tasting notes that follow are summaries of the judges’ opinions, with all replicated commentary eliminated. The countries and states of origin are identified for each brand.





Nose: Vanilla, cream, caramel, butterscotch, toffee, light cocoa, milk chocolate, lemon zest, woody.

Palate: Nougat, pralines, chocolate, cocoa, mocha, brown sugar, vanilla ice cream, creamy, coconut, honeysuckle, orange blossom, orange, lemon oil, mint, peppery, Arabic spices, eucalyptus, cloves, well balanced.

Finish: Cocoa, honey, vanilla, hint of caramel, silky, smooth, elegant.

Nose: Nougat, butterscotch, cream, whipped cream, vanilla, maple sugar, brown sugar, cane, light raw chocolate, roasted hazelnuts, pineapple, melon, hint of coconut, spring flowers.

Palate: Chocolate, milk chocolate, vanilla, butterscotch, praline, cream, whipped cream, powdered sugar, hint of cocoa, banana, coconut, raisin, walnut, cinnamon, mint, cilantro.

Finish: Chocolate, coconut, nutmeg, cinnamon, silky, smooth.

Rhum Barbancourt

Nose: Subtle lemon, dried grass, floral.

Palate: Vanilla, meringue, light brown sugar, molasses, burnt sugar, bitter chocolate, walnut, violets, light floral notes, licorice, cinnamon, clove, peppery, chili pepper, oak, perfect.

Finish: Spicy, pepper, leather, woody, complex, so smooth.

Nose: Vanilla, hints of toasted sugar, fruity, fig jam, apple, honeysuckle, floral.

Palate: Sugar cane, honey, cocoa, vanilla, maple syrup, orange blossom, pineapple, guava, passion fruit, peach, pear, strawberry candy, bubble gum, fruity, ginger, dill, grass.

Finish: Pear, lilac, floral, silky, smooth, mellow.

Finish: Graham cracker, creamy, anise, mint, fresh, clean, bright, smooth, silky, gentle.

Finish: Lemon, herbal, pepper, silky, smooth.

Palate: Pineapple, papaya, banana, orange, pear, fig, coconut milk, nougat, vanilla, crème brûlée, clotted cream, herbal, pepper, white pepper, toast, hay, approachable.

Finish: Toffee, bitter chocolate, floral, anise, smooth.

Nose: Strawberry, banana, nougat, whipped cream, dark sugar, grassy.

Palate: Molasses, cane, pineapple, dried fruit, violets, dill, herbal, cinnamon, cloves, spice, tobacco, nutty, dry, well balanced.

Finish: Citrus, pepper, clove, woody, smooth, dry, lovely.

Nose: Apple, lime, molasses, cream, raw chocolate, nutty, cedar, oak.

Palate: Orange blossom, orange, herbal notes, pecans, nutty, nutmeg, spicy, pepper, hay.

Finish: Spearmint, mineral, spicy, smooth, dry, nice.
