A guide to the best restaurants in Toronto . . .
for those with epicurean taste.

"Fifty" is the key word in evaluating, with the help of designated eaters, unbiased surveys and professional opinions-- which restaurants are finally chosen for the year to be in this distinguished list of fifty.

These five criteria must be met to qualify as one of
"Toronto's Fifty Best Restaurants":

1. To have a proprietor and a chef who have earned a reputation for stability and excellence for at least the past five years.

2. Serve consistently outstanding cuisine.

3. The staff must be courteous, knowledgeable and professional.

4. The decor must be attractive; the ambience pleasing.

5. The wine list must have the breadth and depth to complement the cuisine.

The restaurants in this list are those which would be a great restaurant in any international city.
Cheers, and bon appétit.

Sushi Inn in Yorkville. Amazing service, great quality seafood, outstanding prices and the sake is always hot. Not the fanciest but I've had a lot worse sushi for a lot bigger price tag.

Looking for a new Italian restaurant in Cabbagetown? Formerly the old Piccolo, Plum 226 has undergone renovations and now provides Cabbagetown with a fantastic casual fine dining expereince. Food and wine priced reasonably, entrees between $13-$30, wines by the glass between $7-$11 and bottles starting at $28. They also have a lounge hosting live music and entertainment, most free events - no cover. A great place to enjoy a relaxing or romantic dinner.

Ruth's Chris is without a doubt one of the world's best steakhouses. I recommend it without reservation.

The Wine Bar at 9 church street in Toronto fits your criteria. Food is amazing and the wine list is huge and eclectic, which I love.

I have dined at Oro a few times. It is one of my favorite in the city. From the time you enter to the time you say "fare well", this establishment makes you feel "special." The food, the ambiance and the service is impeccable. Definitely a place that makes a lasting impression!

I have dined at Allen's only once, and will never go back - even though I live around the corner. The food was decent, however, the concierge quite was rude. Even after ordering a few rounds of drinks, appetizers and dinners, our table was asked to leave because we were there "too long" and the table was needed. We were there "just over an hour." We are middled aged people, not a rowdy bunch of kids! My table was not impressed.

Zin Restaurant @ Yorkville is a newly opened chinese cuisine. I have been there once and they have a very good wine selection plus very good food. I found them because I saw the review from Joanne Kates of the Global & Mail.

I was disappointed to see that Vanipha Lanna is not included in your list They have amazing food. I have mixed feelings about posting this comment because I like being able to go there without a reservation and I wouldn't want it to become too popular....
