Best White Rum 2013

 

The Fifty Best White Rum Tasting 2013

 

The Tasting:
The Fifty Best held a “blind” tasting of 22 premium white rums from 11 countries with 17 pre-qualified judges. Strict tasting rules were applied. The order of service was established beforehand by lottery. Each of the white rums were poured into fresh glasses from new sealed bottles, and served at room temperature. Only ice water, unflavored rice crackers and bar snacks were available to cleanse the palate. The judges tasted through three flights of seven white rums each, plus one at the end.

The judges wrote down their impressions of each product on score sheets. The scoring was done on a 5-point system, with 5 as the best. Double-Gold, Gold, Silver and Bronze medals are awarded according to a set range of final point scores received from the judges.

The tasting notes that follow are summaries of the judges’ opinions. The countries and states of origin are identified for each brand.

I guess, if each tasting is accompanied by a small souvenir (to collect & to reminisce), from each of the rum companies, it will make guests to remember each particular rum more than usual. Also, a reminder: Make sure lime, Cola and cranberry juice don't run short for this event. Thank you.

beg to differ on the Mt Gay. one could call it subtle or one could call it somewhat lacking in flavour. really lose the taste in a pina colada imho. For a totally different take on white rum try: the Origine Platine Rum is worth a try. its from Trinadad and Tabago with a massive yet complex flavour v. difficult to describe and wonderful to mix or even sip on the rocks with a slice of lime. v. unique and its a big number. http://www.signaturespirits.nl/en/projects/winery_exchange/origine_platine_rum/
