This is a list of US chocolates and you don't list SEE'S? It's hard to believe. See's is the best chocolate I've ever tasted, altho it's much too expensive. I'd probly want to eat it every day if I started buying it. The trouble with all the chocolates named here is that they're mostly unknown and unavailable. Altho they may or may not be great!

How did Lindt get on this list? They're good, as far as large manufacturers go, but they're hardly great. Certainly if you needed another Swiss chocolatier, Cailler is better, as are Frey and Spruengli.
Wed. December 9, 2015 8:39 PM - by: seemstobe
love lindt , but i am sure there are better ones as well. Are hershey's even real chocolate? it tastes like dirty chalk. A hail the US for Our ability to hype nothing into everything.

I saw many great brands here but many are quite disappointing, I don't think US is the best at manufacturing chocolate when you have the Swiss, Germans and Mexicans too! Recently on my trip down to Mexico, I tried Ki Xokolatl and oh my god it is by far one of the best organic chocolates I have ever tried, I think you can find some info and even products here

I doubt the writers of this list have tried "Whittakers" of New Zealand, (made since 1891). Whilst I haven't tried too many of the chocolate brands on this list, I'd certainly rate it well above Dagoba or Green & Black, both of which are near the top of this list.
Mon. June 29, 2015 2:23 PM - by: Yuzuchoco
@Americhocolate it is not just where the plants are located, but where the technology to bring most of the flavour out from the bean is. And the best in the world in torrefication and pasteurising machines are Italians, those who studied the most the bean are Belgians and those who refined the product and bring it in the plates (and not just carton boxes) is France. Check on each of your favourite american chocolatier (the job name is very "american":) his "chocolate career and you will understand where everything started. Of course, we owe US the best marketing schools :) enjoy chocolate whenever u are

2 from Switzerland... And 21 from USA. WTF?! Switzerland made excellent chocolates before the USA even existed.

This seems to be a predominately US list, so Hershey's should be number one on this list. "My mistake", Hershey's is a Mexican chocolate; "Forget Everything I Just Said".

I tasted most of them. Too much sugar, very sweet. Lind is the worst of them. It would be nice to test Gingder Elizabeth Chocolates, but too expensive! Michael Cluzeil is good. The best chocolates what i have ever tasted is Joel Durand's chocolates.

I know an artisan company called Chocolatier M in Belgium won huge in the internationale chocolate awards competition, winner with 7 medals on 7 entries in the Belgian Selection. Quite a few of these chocolate companies I do love! FYI Sacramento based Ginger Elizabeth Chocolates has excellent chocolates, dessert chocolate bars, milk/dark chocolate bars, macarons, cakes, ice cream/ice cream sundaes/ice cream sandwiches, hot chocolates. As well, their seasonal chocolates/special desserts are so delicious too. So if you love chocolate, and if you are ever in Sacramento, stop in their boutiue, or order online. -> ->

Mary, listed as a japanese chocolatier is in fact from belgium... a nice chocolatier from japan would be "madame setsuko" btw, leonidas is good for unknowledgeable tourists... there are actually too many small chocolatier that have nice products that's it's too hard to list them all. also, we don't know how this ranking was made and which criteria were used ;)
Wed. June 20, 2012 10:36 AM - by: JQ
Proud of seeing "El Rey"... Proud but not surprised... just have to give it a try to realize that is one of the best chocolate experiences ever. And it has the taste, the smell and the spirit of my homeland, Venezuela!
Tue. June 19, 2012 4:04 PM - by: steph
Hi, Really guys, Leonidas, Neuhauss,...? As these are fine Belgian chocolates, they really aren't the best, Belgium has to offer, ever far from it actually compared with other Belgian brands. If you have the chance please try B by B or Centho, Chocolatier M also very nice. Personnaly i think B by B is one of the finest chocolates i tried in the last years, very delicate and full of taste, nice texture and good smell! For all Chocohalics, this is a recommandation worth trying...

Parece que la lista está ordenada por orden alfabético, si no, Chocolate "Del Rey" debe ser N° 1! Deben probar "Caoba" y otros de la misma linea y todo queda claro.

1-2 Amano and Amedei use Vernezuelan cocoa for their best products and Chocolates El Rey is Venezuelan... So thanks for the good news.
Thu. January 12, 2012 11:47 AM - by: manuel toledo
HELP !!!!!!

Sun. November 6, 2011 3:13 PM - by: Greg
You must try Donaldson's Chocolates in Lebanon, Indiana. This is by far the best chocolates I've ever had, hands down. Their truffles in particular are superb, especially the dark chocolate. Their products are hand made, none of that "machine made" taste. They ship everywhere too, so I recommend you try them on the next order you do. I guarantee you won't regret it.
Thu. October 13, 2011 8:59 AM - by: isis ochea
el mejor chocolate es el venezolano viendo la lista y sin temor a equivocarme ninguno de los otros paises es productor de cacao y procesador al 100% de la variedad de los cacaos de mi bella tierra

The best chocolate is the one with the higest flavonoids in the cacao . I know a cacao that has more than >800 mg flavonoids in one square of 9 gram the higest one in the world. And the taste? check it yourself.
Wed. July 13, 2011 3:18 AM - by: Antonio
i'm truly sorry that i have to say it in such a harsh way, but your 50best chocolates list ist complete BS. just chauvinistic in it's badest way. 25 nominations from the USA (the treasure of culinaric excellence *lol*) and two chocolatiers from switzerland, your kiddin', right?! (same goes for belgium for what it's worth). and then what chocolates is "lindt & sprüngli" or "teuscher" supposed to be? first one's a huge company that (among other stuff) produces a variety of at least 100 different chocolat products, and latter is just a confectioner chain, with depences around the world. i thought your lists should be an adviser for good stuff and regional diversities, but i had to learn, they're just hobnailed and smattering. you people should better get your own act together before you arrogate yourself to judge over other peoples handiwork. best regards from switzerland (home of maitres choclatiers since before your nation even existed..)

Es el mejor chocolate. Aunque en Venezuela tenemos excelente chocolatería elaborada con el más fino cacao del mundo. Mis hijos Marc y Melissa, cuando viaja algún amigo es los único que me piden. Sobre todo el tipo Caoba.

Wed. April 27, 2011 12:54 PM - by: Luis
I'm really excited and proud to see Chocolates El Rey on your list. It's definetely one of the best chocolate that you can ever taste. You should come to our country and taste other brands, maybe you can modify some of the brands you chose befores El Rey.
Wed. April 27, 2011 7:02 AM - by: Zara
@ Mr. Simon Saturno: Actually, both La Praline and Kakao are not chocolate makers but confectioners (they elaborate bonbons, etc). Both of them make their products using CHOCOLATES EL REY.
Tue. April 26, 2011 5:54 AM - by: SIMON SATURNO
There are two other chocolate makers in Venezuela as good as El Rey: La Praline (Los Palos Grandes, Caracas) and Kakao (Paseo Las Mercedes, Caracas).
Sun. April 24, 2011 1:44 PM - by: lavici
venezuelan cacao is the best in the whole wide world. not only i grew up adoring el rey and it's delicious dark chocolate, and the plain cookies bathed in dark chocolate, but i see chuao from california is also made with venezuelan chuao cacao, and as my also favorite cluizel and others from belgium and switzerland. i'm happy and proud...

Please, please, please come to Ireland when next compiling your "50 Best Chocolates" list. In Cork there is a company called O'Connaill Chocolates and in my humble opinion they have the best tasting chocolate in the world, and since I am a chocoholic who has travelled a great deal I believe I am qualified to make this comment! They make bars in various cocoa contents including a 99% version, for all those who like the bitter side of chocolate. Whilst I do enjoy their 70% version my personal favourite is either 35-38%, which has a smoothness that melts on the tongue and glides effortlessly down ones throat... because it is easy to eat and always a full, satisfying sensation the normal sized bar doesn't last long for me!!! For more information all you choco lovers, they have a website: Happy eating!:-) Tamzyn

I love Green & Blacks, and also enjoy Whole Foods Organics. But the one i always keep a stash of is Moser Roth. It's the Aldi's store brand. it's as cheap as Hersheys at Walmart, but the flavors are amazing!
Wed. November 17, 2010 7:32 PM - by: TRex
They're a pretty new company so Im not surprised they're not on this list (YET), but check out Fearless Chocolate (, pretty amazing single origin and organic chocolate sourced from brazil, made in america. I am truly impressed with this company.
Thu. November 11, 2010 1:24 PM - by: Lori Jerome
Dilettante chocolate is not on this list, nor is Fran's or Seattle's best chocolate or Theo Chocolates - all very famous in Seattle. Three award winning chocolatiers from Seattle, Washington. How do you get in the top 50?

Although some I agreed with, there were some that were omitted that should have ranked higher than some of what was mentioned. Where was Valhrona or De Brand.

Did you taste Vakko Chocolate from Turkey?? The world’s first fashion house to produce it’s own chocolate. Today, Vakko Chocolate line offers customers 14 lines of different luxurious chocolate to cater to all occasions. Whether you are looking for that perfect gift or just a guilty pleasure there is no alternative to Vakko Chocolate:)

A chocolate I highly recommend is Bernachon from Lyon, France. Fortnums also do great chocolate (own brand bars and ganache, as well as stocking many from the list), L' Artisan du Chocolat are also very good (Chelsea, London). Pierre Marcolini is a far superior Belgian Chocolate compared to Leonidas particularly (also Neuhaus). I second the comment Re. 25/50 from the US. Don't bother with Hotel Chocolate.
Sun. March 14, 2010 6:48 PM - by: Mimi

Can't belive Cadbury is on this list! That's the most discusting choclate I've ever eaten ... However I'm disapointed that I can't find Hotel Chocolate (England) that's real chocolate!
Tue. December 15, 2009 12:00 PM - by: Fred Desmeules
Your top 50 is stupid... 25/50 are from US and everybody knows that the best chocolate comes from Europe. And Cadbury is amongst the best chocolates??? You gotta to be kidding me... I just wasted 5 min of my life reading this post. :(
