Courvoisier Cognac Barrels

Tips for tasting Cognac

  • Use a tulip glass. Thanks to its wide bowl and narrow neck, the tulip glass concentrates Cognac’s nose and allows you to best appreciate the spirit’s subtlety and layers of aromatic complexity. The glass is also easy to hold and is great for admiring color.
  • Don’t warm a Cognac or any fine wine or spirit too much or you will accentuate the alcohol, not the aromas.
  • Swirl Cognac gently. Cognac is packed with aromas and needs less oxygen than wine for the aromas to reach your senses.
  • Put your nose close to the glass but not in it. (For the same reasons as above.)
  • Take a sip. Keep the spirit in your mouth for 2 or 3 seconds before you swallow.
  • Wait 45 seconds. You’ll experience the fullest range of flavors and aromas from about 45 to 90 seconds after sipping.

The Leopold Gourmel Age de Fruit above is listed as a vsop 13yr old Blend, which is NOT correct...it is NOT a blend,or a vsop. It is a 10yr old, UNBLENDED, 100% Natural ( Strictly No additives, so unlike all others )and from a single vineyard,,,much like a wine. This is the mosgt authentic best Cognac in the market !

I agree that many of the smaller cognac producers provide a fantastic quality at a much lower price. http://www.cognacbrands.com gives some info about other brands such as Camus & Conjure

I like the list but missing some smaller brands or new products like Conjure. My favorite brand is Hine Cognac. It's an awesome brand with a good availability even in the US

Where's the Armangnac? The slutty, slightly overweight sister. And, tho its not Cognac... Germain Robin brandies from California are spectacular! Made from Pinot Noir by a former Cognac distiller, loads of honey, dried currants and spice... Their "VS" knocks the socks of many a Cognac VSOP!

The top 3 cognacs are commercially and unacceptably "sweet". Maybe fine for NBA players. And, vanilla is not something I think of as a positive in cognac like in Kelt. As Doug says "If you haven't heard of it it is probably very good"-- Gourmel was tops, but I am not sure anymore. I am a fan of Dom. Giraud which I buy by the case every few months. The Beaulon, a bit wshort in the finish but far better than most out there.

Well if you actually travel to france to purchase Remy Martin you don't get any additives, casue I've tried their VSOP US Import and Non Import and there is a HUGE difference.

"Stick to Remy Martin, Courvoisier, and Hennessy. These premium brands offer the best in each price range." Ha ha ha, you gave me a hearty laugh! The 100% Folle Blanche 7-year-old Chateau Beaulon will knock the socks off of any of the "big four" Cognacs, until you get into their really pricey stuff. With Cognac, if you haven't heard of it, it's probably very good, and likely devoid of boise additive. Stay away from the big four.

Stick to Remy Martin, Courvoisier, and Hennessy. These premium brands offer the best in each price range. I admit there are many on this list I have not tried, but have had the sample a wide range of the ones listed. Yes, price matters! Louis X111 is heaven but at what price?
